Waves crashing on the shore, feet in the sand and the hot sun beaming down on your skin.
Whether you are travelling for a family vacation, spring break, honeymoon or just because…travelling to hot sunny destinations has become a trend for many to relax and get away from the cold and everyday life.
Travelling with travel vacation insurance is important, but it is always important to take the necessary measures to protect yourself and your family while travelling to prevent things like sunstroke, heat stroke and sunburn from ruining your vacation. The following tips will help you to be prepared for your time in the sun.
Best time to enjoy outdoor activities is before 11a.m. and after 4p.m.
This is when the sun is not at it’s strongest, making it safer for you to enjoy those warm rays. If you are out during the sun’s peak hours, be sure to take lots of breaks in the shade.
Check the local UV (ultraviolet) index
Ultraviolet radiation is emitted by the sun (and other artificial sources). The higher the index, the higher the level of UV radiation and chances of sunburn. It is suggested that anyone who is out when there is a UV index 3 or more, must taken precautions to protect one’s self.
Use Sunscreen
To ensure proper protection, make sure your screen is a broad-spectrum (UVA & UVB) sunscreen. When swimming or perspiring excessively, use a waterproof sunscreen. Follow the directions on the bottle and reapply regularly. Remember, cloudy days require sunscreen too.
Dress Sun Smart
Wear loose fitting, tightly woven and light weight clothing. A wide brimmed hat that covers your face and shoulders will offer additional protection. Eyes are also sun sensitive, wearing dark tinted UVA/UVB protectant lenses can provide your eyes with the protection they need.
Seek Shade
Shade can be found in many places during your vacation. Find already existing shade under structures and trees or make your own shade with umbrellas and canopies. In the shade you can still enjoy the scenery, while taking a break from the harmful rays of the sun.
Drink Plenty of Water
Fun in the sun can lead to dehydration if care is not taken to ensure you are replenishing your fluids. While a tropical drink garnished with an umbrella is a great treat, this type of drink does not replace the fluids you lose from your daily activities in the heat. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day and be sure to always have some handy for when you need it.
